From a very young age, this has been the message.

Children now think like that, hate the word exercise and feel bad for doing it, because they believe only fat people should exercise and take care of their bodies

The good news is our brains are built to change, so we can rewire them to change our relationship with food and our bodies.

The more you feel connected with your body, the more likely you are to treat it well (and yourself). It can be tough to treat your body with respect, love and nourishment when you don’t like it very much (that’s one reason why repeating affirmations about how much you love it can be super unhelpful).

Feelings of connection and ‘living in’ your body (embodiment) are associated with lower rates of disordered eating (including restriction, emotional eating and binge eating), and a more positive body image, as well as better connections with others (cue a better sex life) and better overall wellbeing. It’s also a protective factor in the development of disordered eating.
